Stress develops when a person is asked to do more than they think they can handle. Stress is a response to an external stimulus in which (the outcome of) the situation is interpreted negatively. Nevertheless, an occasional moment of stress is not so bad at all. A little stress is probably even healthier than never having stress at all.
If you are active, your adrenal glands are more active than normal, just like your heart rate. They produce stress hormones that literally keep you alive. Even when you sleep, you have a certain amount of stress to keep hundreds of body processes going.
Stress allows us to focus, we focus our attention on what we are doing and bring it to a successful conclusion. For example, if you calculate a difficult sum, the stress in your brain increases and you get more focus and energy. That doesn't feel annoying or negative, it is just necessary to bring your work to a successful conclusion. Without stress we would not be able to achieve great achievements.
Everything related to mental and physical exertion would not be possible without stress hormones. Furthermore, when you are sick, your body needs more energy to raise your body temperature and feed your immune cells that work hard to defeat the viruses or bacteria. Your stress system then works harder than usual.
When you're tired and you don't have time to rest, stress keeps you going for as long as you need to. An occasional 'stress boost' through your body is good for you. It stimulates your body and is good for your mind, which keeps you healthy.
If the stress, however, lasts for a long time and if a person is unable to recover and relax, more serious problems can arise. The stress can cause persistent mental problems, such as worrying, loss of self-confidence or feelings of panic. Chronic stress hinders people's functioning. It can make a person anxious, angry or gloomy. In addition to mental complaints, stress can also cause physical complaints.
